Mathematics

Throughout this entire module for the whole semester, the learning outcome that I had achieved was to understand and apply the fundamental mathematical principles such as basic algebra, trigonometry, properties of circles, area, volume, differentiation, integration and statistics. I was able to analyse and solve problems that involves various mathematical principles and then apply my fundamental mathematic knowledge in built environment context. Lastly, I was able to collect, organise, present and draw conclusion for simple statistical data. With this module, my skills in creative problem solving was further developed and I understood the concepts of differential calculus and its usage in problem solving. Besides that, I had familiarised myself with the geometry of plane and 3-D shapes and extended my understanding of mathematical concepts and their application.

The first assignment for this module involved the understanding of surface area and volume of a given 3-D object which is formed by combination of different solid geometry. In a group of 5 members, we are required to choose 9 objects found in our daily life related to construction in the following categories which were a total surface area less than 500cm2, a total surface area between 501cm2 and 50,000cm2 and a total surface area more than 150,000cm2. After this assignment, I was able to analyse and solve problems that involves area and volume of 3-D objects. I was also able to understand and apply the fundamental mathematical principles about area and volume.

The second assignment involved the skill of handling the statistical data. We are required to propose a statistical study, collect data through surveying, organise, present and analyse the data and lastly draw conclusion from the data. We had to design a surveying form and complete a minimum of 100 survey forms to help us with our study. Through this assignment, I had learnt to analyse and solve problems that involve various mathematical principles as well as to collect, organise , present and draw conclusion for simple statistical data. Moreover, the last learning outcome was to understand and apply the fundamental mathematical principles about statistics.

In conclusion, this module had enhanced my understanding towards Mathematics. My mathematical skills in solving problems had also improved. After completing this module, I was able to apply those skills in my daily life and in the built environment context. The lectures given were clear and detailed so that we can easily understand everything. I am sure that the module will help me a lot in my studies or career in the future.
